A curb mount skylight installation is more energy efficient than a self-flashing installation. There is a wood curb that helps insulate the installation. A generic way to describe how a curb mount skylight is installed is to say the overall concept is similar to a shoebox. The curb mount skylight acts like a lid on a shoebox. There is a wood curb/box frame that is built by the installer. It is commonly made from 2×6 or 2×4 wood studs provided by the installer. The studs are standing up on top of the roof deck creating a base for the curb frame skylight to sit on top of. The curb mount skylight goes over the top and around the wood curb. The aluminum skylight line comes with a weep hole system to allow any condensation to drain to the outside.
The two acrylic layers trap air to create a thermal barrier. This helps retain heat in winter and keep cool air in during the summer. This design also provides better condensation prevention and sound insulation. The curved dome shape is effective at shedding water. White acrylic is the most widely sold skylight acrylic dome color. Whether it is early morning sunrise, mid-day full sun light, or late in the day, cloudy or hazy conditions, the white acrylic provides the most consistent lighting throughout the day due to its translucent feature.
